  • Derrick’s authority and experience in music has been built upon a career spanning media, music industry and radio. As a design school student of the University of Technology, Sydney, Derrick developed his keen eye for design and visual communication. He entered the world of broadcast television and early digital media, where he developed and produced shows for both network television and online.

While working at the TV production company Fremantle, in 2012 Derrick launched his weekly independent radio show, Finetooth Radio - a long-dreamt passion of connecting his music taste with a global audience. This passion project not only further educated Derrick in the depths of music and culture, but expanded his broadcast experience, taking his show from community radio to residencies on NTS Radio (‘16-’20), high end London listening bar Spiritland (‘17-’19) and North American satellite radio network SiriusXM (‘21-’23).

After a decade honing his craft at Fremantle, Derrick moved to London to work with music streaming platform Mixcloud, where he led up the production of the company’s brand partnerships division, LOUD. Working with brands Dr. Martens, adidas, W Hotels, Jagermeister and Farfetch, Derrick held music and culture events throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East with the likes of Peggy Gou, Kelsey Lu and IDLES.

Derrick then spent three years working as a creative director for US record label 88rising - residing in both New York and his now permanent residence of Sydney, Australia. Here Derrick worked directly with artists to create memorable online and offline moments through music releases and festivals. It was at 88rising that Derrick launched North America’s first 24/7 Asian-focused radio station, 88rising Radio on SiriusXM. Following from this, Derrick worked as a creative director, manager and consultant for record labels and artists.

In early 2022, Derrick began his content creator journey, rapidly rising as a prominent voice in music tastemaking, music industry commentary and hifi. Blending music and pop culture analysis, criticism and inspiration with a sense of humour, Derrick quickly stood out as a trusted, knowledgable and authoritative figure in music and entertainment.

  • The mission of my pages are to educate, inform and inspire viewers on all things music, hifi, design and film. From the commencement of my page, I have worked to uphold the trust of my viewers by sharing my authentic insights from a fan or professional standpoint.

I work in a way that promotes a welcoming and trusted environment by ensuring that all the content I share is of genuine personal interest and passion. Therefore, I will never pursue paid promotions with brands I do not align with or deceive viewers about the content I showcase, but rather, prioritise transparency and authentic expression.

The below subheadings outline the decision making framework I employ when working with artists, labels, brands and individuals, and the considerations I must make regarding the impact on my followers.

    Music Promotion and Playlisting

As an avid music lover and industry professional, my reputation has been built on my genuine interest, knowledge and discovery of incredible artists, music and creative processes. Every video is solely researched and written by myself, where I have full control over what content I choose to distribute on my channels. Each topic I choose to cover is based on my personal interest and connection.

To ensure the credibility of my pages, I do not offer any marketing, promotion or playlisting (paid, unpaid or otherwise) for musicians, labels, management, publishing companies etc. In doing so would undermine the reputation and trust I have built with my audience, and I am unwilling to compromise this at any cost.

Due to the nature of my business, I do not have the capacity to review and listen to music submissions.

    Artist Interviews

Currently, I only interview artists in-person, and strictly on my show Solid Air, a format that has welcomed Jamie xx, Max Richter, Lorde, Ichiko Aoba and many more into my home studio. I have to be a fan of the artists I invite into the studio, as it is a very personal and intimate space.

    Music Festivals

I have and will, though, work with festivals in a paid partnership capacity- where I am able to have creative control on the content I make and handpick the music and artists I talk about. The delineation here is that I have the ability to share music I love, while promoting the festival as a value-add. These partnerships will always be disclosed through the use of the Paid Partnership label.

    Press Trips
I am unable to participate in press trips unless there is a paid partnership arrangement, where my flights, accommodation and time is covered. My pages provide significant exposure to the inviting party, and I am unable to provide bespoke content unless a partnership is formed where my craft is employed.

Gifting, Product Promotion, Disclosures & Transparency

Please reach out to info@derrickgee.com for gifting and partnership inquiries. Although I am grateful for brand gifting, be it hi-fi equipment or physical music media, the act does not guarantee a product showcase unless alternate agreements are made. As an individual who is passionate about all things music, audio and design, I will only accept products that I have a genuine personal interest in and am comfortable potentially showcasing it in my videos organically.

    Brand Partnerships
As I have carved out a niche in the music, hifi, design and film environments as a credible and respected spokesperson, I will only consider working with brands who have a good understanding of my mission, values and page, and are willing to grow with me in those areas.

I will only consider a collaboration if I already has an affinity with the brand and would recommend their products regardless. If there is a brand that I am open to performing a paid promotion for, I will create a video showcasing its features, rather than giving an explicit call to action (e.g “you must buy this product”), as that is in conflict with my values of providing unbiased reflections on products.

In order to maintain transparency, I will always communicate whether a post is being sponsored or an item has been gifted - through in-video mention, paid partnership label or collaborative post, allowing my viewers to take into account that the content is a commercial collaboration and will need to consider their purchasing decisions accordingly.

I am open to the following partnerships:

    • Product showcases

    • Sponsorships of Solid Air music show

    • Video sponsorships: where a brand helps to support and fund a video that I already intend to make

    • Ambassadorships

    • Public speaking engagements

    • Panel moderating

    • Music curation/music direction

    • DJing

I will only undertake non-exclusive partnerships as I work with various brands in the same market.
